Our Foodbank in Ryedale
Ryedale Community Foodbank offers emergency food and some household goods such as toiletries and cleaning products, to people in need in the Ryedale area.
In April 2022, following the closure of the previous Foodbank, the new entirely volunteer led Ryedale Community Foodbank opened its doors to clients. We have three foodbank centres in Malton/Norton, Pickering & Kirkbymoorside.
Clients are referred to us by specialist agencies such as North Yorkshire Council, Carers Support, Citizens Advice Bureau, NYC Early Help, Carers Plus Yorkshire, NYC Living Well, Social Services, Next Steps, Sight Support Ryedale, doctor’s surgeries and schools.
People are referred to the Foodbank for a variety of reasons. They may have lost their job or had their hours reduced. They may be on a low income or a zero hours contract and not have enough money to live on. They may be in debt or there may be a delay in their benefits. An unexpected expense such as a washer breaking down may mean they have no money left for food in the short term.
In the majority of cases, we are able to support people in overcoming their immediate need, but we can also offer additional support and guidance by directing clients to sources of long term help and support. We refer to this as ‘Signposting’. The aim is to prevent long term dependency on the Foodbank.
How Ryedale Community Foodbank Works
Food is donated to Ryedale Community Foodbank
Schools, churches, businesses, and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food. Large collections often take place as part of Harvest Festival celebrations. Regular donations are made by the customers of local supermarkets, Morrisons, Lidl, Co-op, Sainsburys, Skipton Building Society and NatWest Bank.
Professionals identify people in need
Foodbanks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, local councils, mental health providers, local charities, local churches and schools to identify people in need and issue them with a foodbank voucher.
Food is sorted & stored by our amazing team
Volunteers sort the food to check that it’s in date and pack it into boxes or carriers ready to be given to people in need. Over 40,000 people nationally give up their time to volunteer at foodbanks.
Our clients receive food
Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for one week’s emergency food. Volunteers meet clients and are able to signpost people to agencies able to help with their longer-term problems.
Meet Our Team
Our Foodbank is run by a small team of Trustees and an army of other volunteers who assist in the collection of donations, dating and managing stocks and the packing and distribution of food bags and boxes. You will receive a friendly welcome from one of our Greeters when you arrive at our centres. We also have trained Signposters to direct clients to the most appropriate agencies for further help.
